2017 Colleen Finalists
Michelle is a senior attending Dennis Yarmouth High School. A member of the National Honor Society as well as Senior Class Vice President, Michelle is also a perennial Varsity Soccer player. She has received many awards both for her academic and athletic achievements, including the Smith Book Award, John and Abigail Adams Scholarship, and ALC All-Star for Track and Field. With her outstanding leadership skills, Michelle has been named Captain of the Girls Varsity Soccer Team, Girl Talk Leader, Lead Class Marshall as well as Project Purple Leader. Accepted to all five colleges she applied to, Michelle has yet to commit to one. However, a biology major on a Pre-Med track will eventually lead Michelle to medical school. Although Michelle has very strong Irish ties, she acknowledges, "the Irish culture does not only exist within the shores of Eire, but instead it exists in all who celebrate the culture."
Colleen is a senior attending Falmouth High School. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has received academic awards in History, Math, Science and English. She has also received the Silver Key for Scholastic Art and Writing. Colleen enjoys debating and has participated in Model United Nations. She has been studying Japanese for two years via an online course. A member of the high school swim team, Colleen also enjoys instructing young children in a local swim program. Colleen's love of dance began as a child and she continues to study several forms of dance. With a concentration on marketing and advertising, Colleen will be attending Suffolk University, Emanuel or Univeristy of Massachusetts. "Being Irish means my identity to me. It makes my past, my present and who I will be in the future."
Lily is a senior at Falmouth High School. She is currently a member of the National Art Honor Society and the National Youth Leadership Forum of Medicine. She is also a member of the Clay Club. She has participated in the Museum on the Green Cultural Center Showcase and History on a Plate Ceramic Showcase. Lily is a member of the Falmouth Clippers' Girls Lacrosse as well as the Cape Cod Lacrosse, a competitive regional league. She professes a love of ice hockey and football. Entering Providence College in the Fall of 2017, Lily is hoping to major in communications. Upon graduation she would like to further her education to become a physical therapist. She hopes to return to the Cape to practice physical therapy. Celebrating St. Patrick's Day in Lily's family has a special meaning and a special name: "Just Plain Tom Day", named for her grandfather. Every year her grandmother tells the story how that wonderful name came about, and of Lily's great grandparents move from Ireland to the United States.
Colleen is a senior attending Monomoy Regional High School. She has excelled academically as evidenced by her honor roll status and her success in her AP courses. A member of the National Honor Society, she serves as treasurer. She is the captain of the Varsity Field Hockey team and on the Varsity Track team. Colleen is also committee chair of the prom, a member of Key Club, STAND, and the Drama Club. A gifted singer, Colleen is in the select choir and has been a participant in the All Cape and Islands Music Festival for four years. Colleen will be attending Brown University in the Fall of 2017 to major in English and Political Science. Colleen finds her Irish heritage inspires her to be grateful in many ways. "I hope I will remember my heritage when tough decisions come up in my life. I know it will be something that will guide me."
